The Shining Ball

Each October, the historic Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado, transforms into a scene straight out of Stephen King’s imagination. The Shining Ball has grown into a cornerstone of the Stanley Hotel’s fall season, often selling out weeks in advance. This lavish Halloween event combines gothic elegance, costumed pageantry, and the hotel’s famous haunted reputation into one unforgettable night.
Guests from around the country gather for an evening of live music, themed cocktails, and elaborate costumes. Attendees describe the experience as part haunted masquerade, part film homage. Costumes range from characters out of The Shining—like the Grady twins or Jack Torrance—to other King creations such as Carrie White, Pennywise the Clown, or Roland Deschain from The Dark Tower. The grand ballroom glows with amber light and eerie décor, while DJs and live percussionists fill the night with rhythm and suspense.
The event began as a celebration of the hotel’s connection to The Shining, the 1977 novel that King conceived after staying at the Stanley. Over time, it has evolved into one of Colorado’s most anticipated Halloween traditions.
For one night each year, the ghosts of the Stanley and the ghosts of fiction seem to mingle—dancing under the chandeliers of the grand ballroom that inspired one of the most haunting stories ever written.
